Hints of fall are already in the air with cooler nights, leaves turning yellow and September has just begun. Fall, for me, is always a time of reminiscing and celebration, a time of change…change that is more profound and visible. Unfortunately with change there also comes some loss, as we see in the trees with the brilliant colors that then they fade and drop to be blown away by the cool fall breeze or the vibrant flowers that dry and go to seed.
Each woman at Passages is seeing fall through new eyes as well. Maybe noticing the colors, the smells, and the feel of fall through clean and sober eyes for the first time in a long time. There is celebration in the new life just as there is in the new colors of the leaves. There is also reminiscing of the old life, the old friends and some fear of letting go of what is comfortable and known, even though it may not have been healthy or happy. It is hard to go into the unknown. Letting go as we let go of summer and move into fall and winter not knowing what new challenges the year will bring. There might even be a period of grieving as they let go of their old life to enter a new one, unsure of what the life will be like. The women at Passages are transitioning from one lifestyle to another and with God’s help they will see those changes with thanksgiving as fall turns to winter and the promise of spring brings us hope.
We have some amazing women at Passages right now. They are learning that they are never alone. They always have Christ there to support them and give them rest when they need it. They are learning to let themselves be loved and forgiven. They are letting themselves live life on life’s terms without having to escape. They are learning to let themselves feel, for until they do they won’t feel the joy that comes as they heal.
Passages as a whole is going through changes this season. The founders of Passages, Carol and Dennis Kelley are going on to the next season of their lives. They have sold their house and are moving on to their next adventure. Passages would not be where it is today with the program, doing evidence based practices, and having the successes without the work and prayers of the Kelley’s. We will miss having them here, but are excited for them and their new adventures. I know that God will bless them as they seek Him in all they do.
Passages could not do what it does for these women and the women coming after them without the continued support of its community and volunteers. If you have not yet had the opportunity to partner with Passages in some way, please consider doing so. You will be blessed as much as you bless her. Take this opportunity to introduce a woman to God and watch your relationship with Him grow closer as well. Be an example of His love to someone who is hungry and desperate to truly know His love for her.
