December 2017

Christmas is almost here!!! Hard to believe! Passages has already been generously blessed with a “Dinner of Honor” for the ladies of Passages and the WEAVE program in Custer at Living Outreach Church in Custer. They spoiled us with steaks, lasagna, service, and gifts. Chariots of Light Christian Motorcycle Club presented both programs with funds to purchase Christmas gifts for the women in their programs. The evening was a wonderful time of bonding, getting to know others, experience blessings and be reminded of the true meaning of Christmas, the most important gift of all..Jesus Christ and all the blessings he brought us.

Tammy continues to be a blessing to Passages. Things overall have been going well at the house. Holidays are a tough time for many of the women. The stability, consistency and structure that Tammy provides in the house has been a true asset. The women have the Christmas tree up in the downstairs living room and presents are under the tree. They also have a small tree up in the living room upstairs. The house looks festive and inviting.

We have five women in the house, and the sixth will arrive on December 18. Our senior most woman, Liza is in her 17th month and will finish with 18 months in January. She will be the first to complete the entire 18-month program and we are so blessed to have had her a part of our Passages family! Please keep her in prayer as she plans for her future beyond Passages.

We have seven more applicants, four who have been accepted and are working on workbooks while still in the South Dakota Women’s prison. The other three are still in the application process. We may not have beds for all of them as we only take six to seven-women at at time and we only expect two empty beds by Feb which is when many of them have parole hearings. Two women on the waiting list are women who have been at Passages before. They both are coming with more surrender and hard learned lessons than before. I think of the story of Peter as he was so devastated when he denied Christ. However, Jesus still loved him and accepted him.

Christmas Eve is on a Sunday although it is not the last Sunday of the month. Some of us plan on going to the house and spending some time with the women. Not sure what we will do for dinner that night, but wanted to treat the ladies with something special. I am not sure if we will open gifts that night or if they will do that Christmas morning. I will leave that up to the women. Our Month End Program will be on New Years Eve this year. Please come and attend if you are able! We don’t have a church to provide a meal so those who come please bring some kind of “finger food”. Healthy snacks and good dessert snacks. We can make sure there is bottled water, napkins and paper plates. It will be a fun celebration night and we will have the program participants share instead of having a speaker.

We will be at United Methodist Church on 7th & Kansas City. at 6:00pm.

Please pray for: the women in the house; the women coming to the house for their hearts and minds to be prepared; for the volunteers and staff; and for the finances for the program operations and grant writing process that is occurring. Also please keep the women who have left the program in prayer.

Please let us know your prayer requests so that the Passages Participants, Volunteers and Staff can be praying for you.

Focus, Celebration and Building Plans

Focus, Celebration and Building Plans

Summer is almost over!!! Hard to believe. There has been a lot going on since our Spring newsletter.  We have had several women coming into the house. Some stay for a long time, and some come and go, some too soon. There have been changes in the program and additions to staff.

Tammy Passamonte has accepted the new Case Management Assistant (CMA) position. It was decided that there was a greater need for a CMA position than to have an Administrative Assistant to help in the office. Our primary focus for the next two years will be to improve retention and focus on providing more services to the women.

We are celebrating a participant’s completion of 12-months in the program. Along with her graduation we are celebrating her decision to be the first woman to go on to complete the additional 6-months of Flying Solo. This will give her and Passages the opportunity to be involved in community service, retreats, and new adventures. All in the spirit of growing stronger in her faith walk.

Our Board of Directors and volunteers worked hard for our Annual Funding Campaign which brought in over $19,000. Thank you to the all who participated and donated. Passages relies heavily on grants, donations and fundraisers. We deeply appreciate the generosity of our community.

Passages has been extremely blessed by Mayor Steve Allender’s support and assistance in bringing a resolution forward to the Rapid City Council to donate a block of land to Passages for the purpose of building so that we can expand and provide more ability to improve retention. We look forward to updating everyone on the progress of the building plans. We are very excited that this will help us to improve retention and expand our services all at once.

Please consider donating to our operating expenses and/or our Building Fund by going to our web page www.passagesliving.com, just note please, if your donation is for the Building Fund. You can get more information about ways to partner with us and how to contact us.

Save the date for our next Passages Pies Plus Fundraiser! Saturday November 4th at Terra Sancta Retreat Center, 7:00 - 9:00 pm. Shantel Krebs, South Dakota Secretary of State will be our guest speaker for the evening. Please come join us for delicious pie, learn more about Passages, and hear from our esteemed speaker.

Passages could not do what it does for these women and the women coming after them without the continued support of its community and volunteers. Take this opportunity to introduce a woman to God and watch your relationship with Him grow closer as well. Be an example of His love to someone who is hungry and desperate to truly know His love for her.

Thanksgiving, Promise & Hope

Thanksgiving, Promise & Hope

Hints of fall are already in the air with cooler nights, leaves turning yellow and September has just begun.  Fall, for me, is always a time of reminiscing and celebration,  a time of change…change that is more profound and visible.  Unfortunately with change there also comes some loss, as we see in the trees with the brilliant colors that then they fade and drop to be blown away by the cool fall breeze or the vibrant flowers that dry and go to seed.

Each woman at Passages is seeing fall through new eyes as well. Maybe noticing the colors, the smells, and the feel of fall through clean and sober eyes for the first time in a long time. There is celebration in the new life just as there is in the new colors of the leaves. There is also reminiscing of the old life, the old friends and some fear of letting go of what is comfortable and known, even though it may not have been healthy or happy. It is hard to go into the unknown. Letting go as we let go of summer and move into fall and winter not knowing what new challenges the year will bring. There might even be a period of grieving as they let go of their old life to enter a new one, unsure of what the life will be like. The women at Passages are transitioning from one lifestyle to another and with God’s help they will see those changes with thanksgiving as fall turns to winter and the promise of spring brings us hope.

We have some amazing women at Passages right now. They are learning that they are never alone. They always have Christ there to support them and give them rest when they need it. They are learning to let themselves be loved and forgiven. They are letting themselves live life on life’s terms without having to escape. They are learning to let themselves feel, for until they do they won’t feel the joy that comes as they heal.

Passages as a whole is going through changes this season. The founders of Passages, Carol and Dennis Kelley are going on to the next season of their lives. They have sold their house and are moving on to their next adventure. Passages would not be where it is today with the program, doing evidence based practices, and having the successes without the work and prayers of the Kelley’s. We will miss having them here, but are excited for them and their new adventures. I know that God will bless them as they seek Him in all they do.

Passages could not do what it does for these women and the women coming after them without the continued support of its community and volunteers. If you have not yet had the opportunity to partner with Passages in some way, please consider doing so. You will be blessed as much as you bless her. Take this opportunity to introduce a woman to God and watch your relationship with Him grow closer as well. Be an example of His love to someone who is hungry and desperate to truly know His love for her.

Holiday Blessings

Holiday Blessings

Thanksgiving is upon us already and Christmas just around the corner! Passages has a lot to be grateful for this year.  The house is filling with women again and the women are being blessed with community support.

We had more than 100 people come to your Holly Hoffman Event and the night was a big success. Thank you to all who came out to support Passages and thank you to those of you who did not know much about Passages, but came to hear Holly Hoffman and were willing to hear about the Passages program and support us with your time and donations. Thank you especially to Holly who was an amazing spokesperson for Passages.

The holidays are sometimes a difficult time for women in a Transitional Living program. Sometimes because of memories of difficult times, lost loved ones and looking at the difficult road ahead of them to gain back the trust of family of friends. Join Passages in blessing the lives of these women with prayer and encouragement. We are always open to ideas for Christmas activities, gifts, dinners, and fun nights with crafts, joy, music and more. God sees these women as worthy, Passages sees them as worthy, and we all need to encourage them to see themselves as worthy.

One of the things Holly Hoffman talked about is that we don’t always get to choose our beginning, but we do get to choose our future. At Passages we teach the women in the program that they don’t have to let their past define their future. They can learn how to make better choices and how to let the love of Jesus into their hearts. Christmas is about the birth of Jesus. Jesus came so that we can be forgiven. Jesus came so that we could learn about who God is and how He wants us to live. Please consider partnering with Passages so that we can continue to teach them about Jesus and what He did for them.

If you have any holiday donations for Passages please call the office at 605-939-0744 or come to 529 Kansas City Street, Room 210. Passages could not do what it does for her and the woman coming after her without the continued support of its community and volunteers.

Passages Monthly Memory Verse(s):
November - Thessalonians 5:15-18 – “Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else. Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

December - Psalms 103:1-5 – “Praise the Lord, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits – who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”
